Sinus Augmentation

Allowing for Successful Dental Implant Placement

A sinus augmentation, or sinus lift, is a common bone grafting procedure for patients who have bone loss in the upper back jaw. When performed by an experienced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon like Dr. Eisenberg, a sinus lift can create the necessary space, as well as strengthen and grow bone, so that a dental implant can be placed in the area. What is a Sinus Lift?

The maxillary sinuses are hollow, air-filled spaces that are located behind your cheeks, right on top of the upper molars and premolars. Some of the roots of the top teeth extend into the maxillary sinuses. If these upper back teeth are lost or have to be extracted, you can occasionally be left with a just thin layer of bone separating your sinuses from your oral cavity.

This will create an issue if you decide you want a dental implant, because the key to implant success is adequate quantity and quality of jawbone to which the implant will be attached. Without enough vertical bone height below the sinus, placing a dental implant can be impossible and could result in damage to the sinus pocket.

Thankfully, a sinus lift is an excellent solution for many patients in this position. During a sinus augmentation procedure, Dr. Eisenberg raises the sinus floor to make room for new bone formation. Once the sinus floor has been lifted, she places a bone graft below it right above the bony ridge of the gum line that’s responsible for anchoring the teeth in the upper jaw. By growing and strengthening bone and creating enough vertical height, a dental implant can then be placed and your smile can be restored.

Benefits of a Sinus Augmentation

Creates Optimal Conditions for Dental Implant Placement

A sinus lift creates sufficient space and quantity of bone to allow for a dental implant to be placed in the upper back jaw.

Supports Existing Teeth

The bone graft during a sinus augmentation creates solid support for the remaining teeth in the area, which prevents further tooth loss and boosts your oral health.

Improves Appearance

Adding bone to the back of the upper jaw can restore or maintain your facial structure and create more definition.

Am I a Candidate for a Sinus Lift Procedure?

While every patient is unique and Dr. Eisenberg will create a personalized treatment plan based on your needs, a sinus lift could be needed if you:

  • are missing more than one tooth in the back of the jaw.
  • are missing a significant amount of bone in the back of the upper jaw.
  • are missing teeth because of a birth defect or condition.
  • are missing most of the upper teeth but need support for dental implants.

Treatment Considerations

When you visit our practice for a sinus lift in Knoxville, Dr. Eisenberg will use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to assess the location of your maxillary sinuses, as well as the bone conditions. If you’re a candidate for a sinus augmentation, the procedure can be performed with a local anesthetic, however, many patients opt for sedation, such as IV sedation.

Once we’ve numbed the area and/or you’ve been sedated, Dr. Eisenberg will begin the process. There are a few different sinus lift techniques that can be used. In the most common sinus augmentation procedure, Dr. Eisenberg exposes the jawbone by making a small incision in the premolar or molar region. She then cuts a tiny opening in the bone and pushes the sinus membrane upward. Finally, she fills the space below it with bone grafting material before stitching up the incision.

If you have enough bone between your upper jaw ridge and the bottom of your sinus to stabilize a dental implant, sometimes, Dr. Eisenberg can perform a sinus augmentation and implant placement in a single procedure. If you don’t have enough bone, the sinus augmentation will be performed first. Depending on the type of graft material used, the graft may have to mature for several months. Once it matures, Dr. Eisenberg will place dental implants into the new bone, restoring your smile.
